Health Literacy in the Margins
As part of the BrooklynBridged project team, Darren organized and hosted a panel discussion between health care providers and prominent health advocates in the local transgender community to discuss the illustrate what health literacy looks like in practice, patient self-advocacy and ways in which local healthcare providers succeed or fail at creating even and open healthcare encounters and making services welcoming and accessible. The Brooklyn Community Pride Center was kind enough to open up their space for the programming and the STAR Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center was kind enough to co-sponser the event as well as connect me to great healthcare providers that could meaningfully discuss the topic.
